10.0 SAFETY EQUIPMENT (SE)
11.0 COMBINED SAFETY SHOWER AND EYEWASH UNIT
11.1 General
Accidental chemical exposures can still occur even if suitable PPE are worn; emergency shower and
eyewash are a necessary backup to minimize the effects of accident exposure to chemicals. Emergency
showers can also be used effectively in extinguishing clothing fires or for flushing contaminants off clothing.
In general, the technical requirements of combined safety shower and eyewash are as follows:
-
Emergency shower and eyewashes shall be manufactured in accordance with ANSI Z358.1[25];
-
Safety stations will be constituted by an eyewash and emergency shower combination;
-
Safety shower and eyewash shall be provided with a flow rate of at least 75.7 Liter/min (20 gpm)
and 1.5 Liter/min (0.4 gpm) respectively for a minimum of 15 minutes using tepid water in a
suitable temperature range of 16-38°C.
- Water shall be always held at the adequate temperature (16-38°C); Water supply tank and piping
design (i.e. pipe wall thickness, insulation, tracing etc.) shall be sufficient to provide water within
this temperature range.
- The proposed tank shall be adequately insulated on all sides with minimum 40 mm thick
polyurethane material with aluminium foil cover and additional white GRP sun shields protection
against solar radiation to minimize the effects of temperature gain.
- Material of construction of safety shower and eye wash unit shall be:
Tank Heavy density polyethylene HDPE /MDPE / Stainless Steel.
40 mm thick polyurethane material insulation with aluminium cover
Additional white GRP sun shield(for tank) protection against solar radiation
Shower components, piping, valves, frames and all other metallic components in
stainless steels (SS316 /SS316L).
GRP Panelling on 3 sides.
All exposed water piping components shall be thermally insulated.
- The walking distance from the location of hazard to the safety shower/eyewash should not
exceed 10 seconds.
-
Emergency showers and stations shall be identified with a highly visible sign and suitably lighted;
-
The unit shall have signboards for identification with operational instruction with English and local
language.
- All fixation points shall be provided for mounting to concrete plinth and/or foundation.

-
Emergency showers and stations shall be capable to operate for suitable flushing period;
-
Emergency shower and eyewash of the safety stations shall be able to be used simultaneously
by the same individual;
- Emergency shower and eyewash shall not come into contact with any electrical equipment that
may become a hazard when wet.
11.2 Location
Combined Safety showers and eyewash shall be:
-
Provided in all areas where operators may manage or be accidentally exposed to chemicals;
-
Located as close to the hazard as possible;
-
Located on an unobstructed path between the workstation and the hazard (i.e. workers should
not have to pass through doorways or weave through machinery or other obstacles to reach
them);
-
Located where workers can easily see them;
-
Located in an area where further contamination will not occur;
12.0 EYEWASH UNIT
Self-contained eye wash unit shall be installed in Battery room, with main requirements as follows.
- A self contained eye wash unit shall have container capacity of 34 litres. The eye wash unit shall
be capable of providing potable water to eyes at not less than 1.6 LPM for 15 minutes.
- The eyewash unit shall be fixed in a place and capable of being removed by designated
personnel for inspection and maintenance.
- The eyewash unit shall be on the same floor as the hazard (no stairs to travel between the
workstation and the emergency equipment);
- The eyewash unit shall be located near an emergency exit where possible so that any responding
emergency response personnel can reach the victim easily.
13.0 WINDSOCK
Windsock is a wind direction indicator to be provided in the facility as well as in the flare area. It gives an
indication of the direction of the cloud dispersion, supporting personnel moving away during an emergency
event (e.g. toxic and flammable clouds dispersion). Windsocks shall be located in such a way they are highly
visible from all areas.
