Fire Equipment
* 1. Fire exits and firefighting points shall be clearly marked and kept free from obstructions at all times. 2. Fire extinguishers shall be examined and serviced annually by a competent person. 3. Fire Marshals shall have been trained in the use of fire extinguishers shall be the only persons allowed to operate them. 4. The fire alarm system shall be tested weekly and recorded. The fire alarm call points shall be sequentially tested as part of the weekly test and the alarm panel checked to ensure that indicator lights are working. The system shall be examined and serviced annually by a competent person. 5. Emergency lighting shall be tested monthly and a soak test conducted annually. 6. Smoke detectors shall be tested annually. 7. As part of the weekly test emergency exits and firefighting points shall be checked to ensure that they are not obstructed. Fire exit doors shall be checked to ensure that they operate satisfactorily. 8. A fire risk assessment shall be carried out annually and recorded. As part of the assessment the personnel roll call list used for fire evacuation procedure shall be reviewed against Accounts records. 9. Records of inspection and test shall be maintained. |
Fire Marshals
The Fire Marshals shall be appointed and trained as to their duties to be carried out at the time of a fire emergency.In the event of an emergency staff shall follow the instructions of Fire Marshals who shall check their designated area if it is safe to do so to ensure that everyone has left the area and that where possible windows and doors are closed. |
Fire Prevention
Combustible materials on the premises include: welding gases, propane gas for FLTs, timber, glass reinforced plastic sheets and components, paper, cardboard packaging and materials, office supplies, furniture and equipment, mains gas, flammable substances.No smoking is allowed inside the building.Gas cylinders which are not in use must be stored outside of the premises at least one meter from the building.Inspection of fixed electrical installation should be performed according to the Electricity at Work Act 1989 (every 3 years for manufacturing sites). Records of such inspection should be kept by QHSE Technician both electronically and in hard copies.PAT testing of all electrical appliances on site should be carried out on an annual basis.Air handling and LEV installation should be inspected on an annual basis. Records to be kept by QHSE Technician. 3.7 Gas heating boilers should be inspected by an approved gas fitter on an annual basis as required by the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998. Rules for Storage and Use of hazardous substances are established by separate procedure. Employees should follow instructions given in COSHH assessments.No one may use an open flame in a work area where flammable substances are stored, used, handled or processed.All equipment used in the shop floor should be inspected by the personnel responsible for the subject area/ department on an annual basis. Records from such inspections should be provided to QHSE Technician and kept for Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 compliance purposes.Appropriate housekeeping procedures should be followed to control accumulation of material which may contribute to a fire emergency.All employees should be trained in the Emergency Plan on an annual basis or when changes to the procedure occur. Records from that training should be kept by QHSE Technician. |
Action to be taken by person discovering a fire
On discovery of a fire in any area of the building the first action to be taken by any employee is to raise the alarm by operating the nearest manual fire alarm call point. The alarm will actuate through pressing the centre of the call point.Fire alarm call points are situated throughout the building at all fire exit doors.The person raising the alarm will immediately dial 999 and request the Fire Brigade and any other appropriate emergency service that may be required i.e. an ambulance. |
Action to be taken by staff upon hearing the alarm
Upon hearing the fire alarm all employees must immediately evacuate the building using the nearest safest fire exit.Those persons with or near any visitors, in the event of an emergency, shall be responsible for ensuring that the visitors follow the required safety procedure.A number of fire extinguishers are located around the building. They must only be used by Fire Marshal and only if it is safe to do so. Nobody is to place himself/herself in any danger. Members of staff who have not received suitable training must not operate the fire extinguishers.No one shall take any personal risks. People are to get out and stay out. |
How the Fire Brigade is to be called
The person raising the alarm will immediately dial 999 and request the Fire Brigade and any other appropriate emergency service that may be required i.e. an ambulance. The address shall be clearly stated as: Hughes Safety Showers Whitefield Road Stockport SK6 2SS 0161 430 6618 The information regarding the building should be provided as well as the location of the fire, if known, shall also be given (for example, ‘fire in the ground floor office’). |
Evacuation Procedure
When the fire alarm sounds: 1. Everyone shall evacuate the building immediately via the nearest, safest fire exit and proceed to the muster point, by the delivery gate, and report to their manager. 2. People shall respond promptly in a safe and calm manner and direct any visitors and/or contractors from the building. 3. People shall not stop to collect personal belongings. 4. The Fire Marshals will ensure that the gate is opened for the Emergency Services. 5. The Fire Marshals will carry out a roll call. 6. Any member of staff, visitors or contractors that are not at the muster point must be assumed to be still in the building. No-one shall re-enter the building until the Fire Brigade says it is safe to do so. |
Liaison with the Fire Brigade
At the time of the emergency, a Fire Marshal will liaise with the Fire Brigade and inform the officer in charge of any member of staff, visitor and/or contractor unaccounted for at the roll call. |
Fire Evacuation Drill
The evacuation procedure shall be carried out twice a year and recorded. As part of the evacuation exercise varying escape routes shall be utilised.As part of the evacuation procedure but after the drill Fire Marshals should discuss the effectiveness of the drill, record the time of evacuation and implement any improvement ideas if needed. |
Lone workers
In case of discovering a fire, lone worker shall raise the fire alarm in the building in case there is someone else working alone in different location.The person raising the alarm will immediately evacuate the building using the nearest safest fire exit.The person raising the alarm will immediately dial 999 and request the Fire Brigade and communicate about the emergency to the Company Management. |
Evacuation of disabled people
If the disabled person is employed, or visitors with disability is known to attend the site a specific Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) will be required.PEEPs are advance plans for those who may need assistance or special arrangements during an emergency evacuation. Line managers in conjunction with SHEQ Technician will initiate the PEEP assessment and will consult with Fire Marshals.Temporary waiting spaces (refuge space) shall be identified by the business when required. A temporary waiting space is an area that provides a space to accommodate physically impaired persons ho are unable to independently negotiate stairs in the event of an evacuation. Where persons are located within a refuge space, it may not be necessary to immediately evacuate. Fire Marshals will determine first the cause of an activation of fire alarm before deciding the most appropriate action to take. The use of buddy system is required during the evacuation of the disabled persons. On fire alarm activity a person(s) in the building is assigned to escort and assist the disabled person from the building. Further information and in-depth detail should be given to the disabled person, line manager, person responsible for visitor and Fire Marshals. This should include the confirmation of the evacuation method when confirming the PEEP. |
