3.7 PROPER USE OF HEARING PROTECTION
3.7.1 EAR PLUGS:
Pass your left hand behind your head and lift up the top of your right ear to open up the ear cavity. Insert the earplug into the ear cavity, pressing and turning lightly
Figure 4: Proper Wearing of Hearing Protection
Plain cotton earplugs shall not be used for hearing protection. Disposable earplugs should be discarded at the end of each shift.
3.7.2 EARMUFF
Before putting on your earmuffs, it is important to inspect them for cracks, tears, or other signs of wear.
When putting on earmuffs, push hair away from your ears. Center the earmuffs over your head and make sure the seal is tight and resting comfortably. The cups should entirely cover your ears.
Remember that anything that comes between your ear and the earmuff will make them less effective and reduce your level of protection. Ensure that the eyewear temples is not interfering with the seal. Some earmuffs are attached to hard hats to form a good seal, when wearing the hard hat correctly.

3.8 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
QG shall ensure that no person in the workplace is exposed to an unsafe atmosphere in excess of the occupational exposure limits as outlined in procedure PRT-HLT-PRC-023 Hazardous Materials Management. These include:
▪ Oxygen deficient atmospheres ▪ Toxic atmospheres, e.g., H2S gas ▪ Airborne contaminants, e.g., gases, vapors, fumes, mists, dusts, and fibers
The details of Qatargas-approved Respiratory Protection Equipment are available in Appendix-6 of this procedure.
The requirements for air-supplied breathing devices are provided in PRT-PSF-PRC-003 Breathing Apparatus Usage, Filling and Maintenance procedure.
3.8.1 PRECAUTIONS DURING USE OF RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT
Respirator selection is based on the job task, contaminant, and/or expected concentration range. Filters fitted into a half- or full-face mask are only suitable for removing low concentrations of certain gases and vapors. Filters have limited use, storage life and are specific to certain gases or vapors. Filters are matched to a particular make of mask. It should be noted that face mask and the filters / cartridges used should be of the same make. Refer to the Respiratory Procedure PRT-HLT-PRC-005 for further details.
Facial hair prevents effective sealing between the respirator and the facial skin, resulting in toxic gases being inhaled by the respirator user. Employees who have facial hair shall not wear respirators with tight-fitting face pieces if facial hair comes between the sealing surface of the face piece and the face, or that interferes with valve function. Employees who are required to wear tight-fitting face pieces shall trim their beards so that they do not interfere with the sealing surface of the respirator or are not so large that they could interfere with valve function. Alternative approach is for the employee to wear respirators that do not require a face seal specifically, the positive pressure respirators of the hood and helmet type, and types that can be used with a continuous-flow, supplied-air respirator, where facial hair and beards will have less effect on the fit. For more details, refer to relevant Qatargas procedures.
